Babita Kumari Phogat Some Lesser-Known Facts

  • She has been one of India’s top wrestlers in the 53-55kg category and performed exceptionally well at the international arena.
  • A book, based on the life of the Phogats, claims that Babita’s parents wanted a son before she and her elder sister Geeta had born; as her father wanted a boy and make him a world-class wrestler.
  • She went on to win a Gold at the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games.
  • In 2016, she qualified for the Rio Olympics; becoming only the fourth female wrestler in the country to qualify for the Olympics. However, she could not win a medal in Rio and was defeated in the first round itself.
  • After a disappointing performance at Rio Olympics, Babita won silver at the Commonwealth Games held in Goldcoast in 2018.
  • A Bollywood film- Dangal (2016), which is based on her father’s life & her journey towards success along-with her sister Geeta, became a blockbuster soon after its release on 23 December 2016. The film earned the Phogath Sisters a household name in India.
  • Babita went through a hand operation and was released from the hospital just 4 days before the trials of the 2010 Commonwealth Games. She won a silver medal in the tournament.
  • In 2013, the Haryana Government offered her the post of Sub Inspector (SI) in the Haryana Police for her outstanding performance in the 2010 Commonwealth Games.
